Biography

Q&A

Q. It's quite an achievement to have come runner up in the UK International Songwriting Contest for best Pop Song of the year. How was that?
A. Amazing. There were over 6,000 entries from around the world. Also, 5 of my songs made the finals and 18 made the semi finals. So there is a bit of a buzz happening for me at the moment. I'm hoping to turn this momentum into getting some of my songs up for consideration by already established Producers and Artists.

Q. What would be the one thing that sets you apart from other songwriters? From listening to the songs on your site I'm guessing versatility.
A. Yeah, I guess I'm lucky in that I have the ability to write in most styles.

Q. Is it true the producer of Idol contacted you to go on the show?
A. Yeah, that was very surreal...the producer sent me an email out of the blue, then rang me up the following day to arrange to have coffee with him and discuss going on the show. He said they wanted to get some songwriting cred back into the show.... it would help ratings.

Q. And......?
A. Well, I was very honored and grateful that he took the time to get in contact with me but I declined as I never felt that was the right way for me to go. It's kind of the opposite direction I'd like to take as I'm not wanting to be the performer. I'm only interested in writing (and co-writing) songs with Producers and Artists for their albums.

Q. Was it a conscious decision not to be the performer of your songs?
A. Yes it was. Writing is what I do best and what I want to spend the rest of my life doing.

Q. How do you write songs?
A. Each time it's different but songwriting and dreaming are very similar in that my subconscious holds onto all the parts, sometimes for years and then somehow pieces it all together. The pianos and guitars are just my brushes I use to paint the picture. When the songs come through they all arrive in different shapes, sizes and styles. That's the exciting part about it. When I walk into the studio I have no idea what's about to happen....it amazes me every time. The honest truth is that the good songs write themselves.

Q. What inspires you to write?
A. Emotions. Anything I see or feel that stirs the emotions.

Q. At what point did you realize you wanted to become a songwriter?
A. I guess when I was about 11 or 12, as soon as I could string 3 chords together. It just happened. It creeps up on you when you're young and it becomes like food and water as you get older and you can't live without it.

Q. What was your first guitar?
A. A no-name classical guitar from a fete that cost about $15. I actually still write most of my music on it to this day.

Q. How many guitars do you own now?
A. Always too many but never enough.

Q. Where do you see yourself in the future?
A. I just want to get to a place where I can say that my songs have made a difference to people's lives.
